One of the objectives of our trip has been to meet and engage the existing Linux crowd in Malawi, and after a really good meeting with Bennett Kankuzi of University of Malawi (The Polytechnic), we now see proof of the existence and energy of the Malawian FOSS (Free Open Source Software) community!
Bennett has previously been teaching Linux in Blantyre, and is already connecting with a big community online and at the university campus.
The significance of this is quite huge, as players with expertise can help strengthen the centers technically, give qualified training and start projects on a local basis. Which is exactly what we dream that our centers should be used for.
Blantyre Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) Users Group is a grouping of individuals that use free and open source software but are based in Blantyre, southern Malawi.
We cherish the philosophy of free and open source software (FOSS) which is software that is liberally licensed to grant users the right to use, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of the software source code. In the context of free and open source software, “free” refers to the freedom to copy and re-use the software, rather than to the price of the software.
