Trash, aid and ethics

A documentary project has been revealed yesterday: That the organization "TrashAid" was luckily just a hoax project to investigate the ethics of charity and consumption in Denmark. Read more about it in Danish here: http://ekstrabladet.dk/nationen/article1653774.ece

We wish to extend our respect for the project conducted by TrashAid and the significance it carries: To highlight misunderstandings of the ethics about trash and aid. Too many people do not care for the trash that they create, and that people are all too happy to help out when it does not cost them anything. Said in another way, as long as it does not interfere with our usual consumer patterns, we are all too happy to help! Furthermore, TrashAid has highlighted that we should always take a critical stance towards the practice and discourse that an aid project is selling.

Trashaid.com reads:

Hvis vi i Danmark og Vesten vil gøre noget godt for verden, så skal vi reducere vores forbrug, ikke sende resterne af det til Afrika.

English: If Denmark and the West wants to do something good for the world, we should reduce our consumption, not send the left-overs to Africa.

We are not involved with TrashAid, but we would like to let everyone know that FAIR is constantly debating the ethics of our activities. We do not wish to legitimize overconsumption, nor do we wish to transfer useless equipment.

We always ensure that we send useful equipment to our receivers, and that we do not legitimize over-consumption.

Furthermore, we ask all our members and donors to remember that electronic equipment should be planned for such that it may enjoy a maximum life-span, be it in their custody of someone else's. Whenever you buy an electronic good, you alone have the responsibility to ensure that it enjoys a long and active life-span.
